I call those "Doorstops". I try always to be working my way through one. This decade's project is Les Miserables. So far I have made it through War and Peace and The Dream of the Red Chamber. The second is a sprawling Chinese novel written in the 18th century. The most complete version is translated as The Story of the Stone in six volumes. You can also count some non-fiction among the Doorstops, such as Rebecca West's Black Lamb, Grey Falcon, recounting her travels through Yugoslavia in the 1930s. Plutarch's Lives is also a Doorstop. It is a real pity that the last complete English translation seems to be Dryden's done in the 17th century! You cannot claim to be a real reader unless you have plowed through at least a couple of Doorstops!

And again, my dear B.N., I proclaim my love for your persona! You are my hero!

Oh, slyder, you make me blush! You're my hero, too!

I think the last Doorstopper that I made it through was The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope. I made a dent in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but it defeated me. And it was an abridged version anyway!
