The Eternal Question

How should one sort one's books? Unfortunately, the space available to me being what it is, my books aren't really sorted as I would wish. I have to take advantage of whatever space I can find, with no possibility of any sort of order to it all. Someday, however... Yes, someday...

Alphabetical by author and by theme. Plus, paperbacks should be located in a different room than hardcovers. And you can and should double paperbacks on the shelves two deep to save space. But thats just because thats how my parents did it and it worked great for us. Plus, if you die its really easy for your heirs to go thru and figure out whats there and what everybody wants. When our Mom and Dad died we decided to give their book collection to Savanah College of Art and Design where our youngest brother was then a student. The college was clearly underwhelmed that a family's collection of books was being gifted to them (even suggesting that we throw them in a couple of boxes and drop them in the mail) until we told them that there were 27,000 books in the collection. They sent a team of librarians armed with laptops up in a big truck the next day and they were in and out in no time thanks to Mom and Dads system.

But, but, but, but... how could you have given the books away? All those books... *dreamy eyed* Your parents were my kind of people.

Well Frank, we took all we wanted and between the three brothers we've probably got 20,000 books if not more so there was more than enought to go around.
