Happy Halloween! I hope that as everyone has a ghoulishly grand time, though, you take some time out to consider those less forunate!

I Plead Guilty...

...to being one of those lonely gays in front of their computers who, along with those infernal straight people and their Borg-like need to assimilate what we gentrify and then kick us out of it, are killing the gayborhoods.

I mean, it's good that at least in some parts of the country we don't feel like we have to huddle together for warmth and protection anymore, but is it GOOD in a larger sense? I don't know. Even someone as atomistically hermitic as myself likes the idea that there's an area of major US cities that I can go and be among my homosexual brethren and sistren. I don't want to see and gays and lesbians just become invisible again, this time by total homogenization and assimilation into the mainstream, leaving behind all that is fabulous to be just like the straights (except liking dick/pussy) so they'll like us, diluted into the rest of society like a drop of a fabulous cobalt blue dye into ten gallons of water. Yeah, the blue's still there, but if you can't detect it without advanced optical or chemical equipment, it's just lost.

October Is The Cruelest Month

What is going on? Two of my favorite bloggers, Vince and Eric, have called it quits. Now where will I go to get my fix of Chicago commuter hell stories and Crypto-Maoist vexillological musings? You're being so selfish, guys; what about me??? *sigh*

Anyway, nothing but love and fuzzy best wishes to both of them, and here's to hoping they don't become strangers. Both blogs will remain linked in the sidebar indefinitely. You never know when the blogging bug will bite again!

Linguistic Irony

If one uses the word lexiphanes, doesn't that automatically make one a lexiphanes? Ponder that for a while; it's my gift of Zen to you.

I'm Not As Cynical As I Thought

Some people think the "Dumbledore is gay!" thing was some sort of "stir up controversy to get sales up!" ploy. I totally don't. I mean, why would she bother at this point? And from the reports I read, it just didn't seem this came out in any way other than a "Oh, I always thought he was gay" way. Plus, JK Rowling has never struck me as a particularly contrived sort of person who would or could go along with such a ploy. But maybe I just haven't gotten rid of enough of my shiny-happy idealism in favor of hard-bitten cynicism yet.

The funniest reaction to the news, though is this:

*LOL*

Ikea

I went to Ikea for the first time today (my sister bought me some new bookshelves for my birthday). Wow! I was totally blown away; everything was just so sleek and sexy and Scandinavian! It made me want to move out and create a minimalist Ikea house.

Also, I now know where to go to cruise! I saw at least three gay couples, and one or two singletons, walking about. I was with my sister, mother, and grandmother, so I couldn't really go up to them all, "Hey, you guys want a threeway?" though. Still, good to know.

Happy Birthday to... ME! Yes, 25 years ago today, my sainted mother endured the scalpels of a Cesarean and brought me into this crazy, cruel world. And, lo, there was much celebration!

Nothing But Star Wars

GayProf imagines what the new live-action Star Wars TV series will be like. I love them all, but for this one ("It’s a reality competition show where contestants must – Oh, I don’t know -- cook stuff – or maybe sew something. The winner gets $25,000 and an apprenticeship with Lucas Arts. The losers are choked to death by Darth Vader’s strange mental powers.") I have the perfect line for when Vader chokes that week's eliminatee: "You've failed me for the last time!" *LOL* I'm such a nerd and I LOVE IT!

Reason # 35621-A While I'm Just Going To Be A Loser And Never Move Out Of My Parents'

Moving stuff is a pain in the ass!

We're redoing my room this week, and, even though I'm not doing most of the painting and stuff, I've still had to move all my crap, and it is not fun. And all the cleaning and sanding and crap sucks, too. So unless I find a big, burly butch gay with lots of big, burly friends who will do all that kind of stuff, I'm just going to stay in my old room.

(You can start yelling and/or shaking your head in disgust at me...... now,
Scott.)

Job Update

So, a month into the job and... it's awful, frankly. I'm still waiting for training, so I have NOTHING to do. It's hard and oddly draining to do nothing for eight hours a day, and I feel bad that everyone's really busy around me (thus the lack of training) while I try to keep from banging my head against my desk by surfing the Net. I also feel kinda bad that I'm getting paid to sit around; it's the non-practicing-Catholic guilt.

I've said before that everyone's really nice, but as I've also said, they're very, very low-key and don't make for a stimulating work environment. Most of them are a lot older than me and have been there since the dawn of time (some of them have been there almost as long as my parents are old, if not longer), so we don't have a whole lot in common. And they're engineers: not exactly the most raucous bunch normally anyway.

Also, frankly, I just ain't feeling it. I don't know if I'm even cut out for the traditional workplace; I just don't feel comfortable. I really think I was born to freelance, but that's a dangerous and not terribly stable path. Could I find enough work? Live with no benefits? Would I even know how to go about actually doing it? I find it a lot to ask of my parents, who have been so incredibly supportive of me, financially and emotionally, for nearly twenty-five years now, far longer than a lot of parents support their kids, to bear with me why I try to feel my way through the thorny labyrinth of self employment and hustle up enough work to not be a total deadbeat because I don't like getting up early and wearing slacks. And there's a part of me that fears the possible massive failure of trying such a route, as well as fear that if I leave a good gig like I have now, I'll never get another chance and will be a real loser and burden to my family.

So that's where I'm at. I'm so fun!

Bad Blogger

I've been fairly remiss in my blogging duties of late. I apologize to [all ten of] you who read regularly; inspiration just hasn't hit that much, and there's the new job, etc. I'll try to do better, I promise.

I Don't Know If It's A Good Idea Or Not, But I Know I Don't Want To See It On My TV

Last night, I saw an ad for a "personal lubricant" in mousse, instead of KY-like gel, form. It had a straight couple being all flirty and lovey and a minute away from getting it on. Personally, I don't really think I'd want my lube to share anything in common with chocolate, but whatever.

Well, DUH!

NerdTests.com says I'm an Uber Cool Nerd King. What are you? Click here!

Your Score: Pure Nerd

69 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 26% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

Congratulations!

Turning On The Chinese

Does anyone know how I can get Firefox to show me Chinese and Japanese fonts? I have the "Auto-Detect" on under View: Character Encoding, and UTF-8 on, but all I ever get is those box things and Postscript symbols. I don't read Chinese or anything, I'm just tired of stuff not showing up right on sites like this.

I Get Emails

Once again, I was surprised and delighted (because I'm lame) to be emailed by a very nice gentleman by the name of Chris Williams of EdenFantasys [NSFW]. They came across the blog, saw all the smut around the place, and thought I might give them a link. I looked at the site and really liked what I saw; they have a large selection of toys and I have my eyes on a few of them for myself. Also, I really like the design; it's simple and clean, not lurid like some sites of similar companies are. (I'm such a geek that I look at a sex toy site and comment on the design. I love me.) Check it out.

Just to be clear, I'm not being paid or anything for this. I'm just so easy that a friendly email will get you anything! *LOL*

Sure, in the 1960s you mostly had to be in the closet and classified as mentally unstable, but at least you got to read stuff like this!

She's With Charles In The Big Studio In The Sky Now

Game show legend Brett Somers has died. I'm gay, so naturally Match Game, with its bevy of flaming queens and wacky broads, is a favorite. Ms. Somers, and her crazy glasses, will be sorely missed.

The Golden Crane Flies...

Robert Jordan has died. His The Wheel of Time series is what first got me into fantasy fiction in a big way. Though the series has groaned under its own weight for a number of years now, and I can't say I've read the latest ones more out a sense of duty and stubbornness than excitement, it was still a most important influence on my reading life.

On a more personal note, I attended a signing/reading in Philly for the last book, and he was a perfectly charming man with a lovely wife. My condolences go out to her and all his other friends and family.

First Week Review

Well, I survived my first (almost-) full week at the new job. It went pretty well, overall, though I still don't know how long I'm going to stick with it. I'm not actually doing a lot of my job yet because they've been busy this week and can't really train me that much. My feelings throughout the day run the gamut from "Oh my god, I can't stand this, I'm quitting right now!" to "Whatever!" to "I can handle this!" and back again. Everyone is extremely nice, but it's a very... low-energy is the only way I can think to describe it, workplace. There's not a lot of talking or camaraderie, even though the office is very open-plan, which kinda makes me feel exposed and vulnerable. Once I really get into the swing of things, maybe it'll all get better.

Workin' It

My first day was... fine, really. I'm a little ambivalent because I haven't really started doing stuff yet, and might not for a bit, so it's hard to say how the job is. Everyone's very nice there, which is good. Right now, I'd say that I don't think I'm going to be doing this very long, just because I don't think the actual technical writing is really going to be my thing, but we'll see.

He Can Highlander Me Any Time!

I really don't know what it is, but there's something just inherently sexy about a man in a kilt (soooooooo NSFW). I think it might just be the blood of my (flaming!) Celtic ancestors coursing through my veins. Or maybe it's just the thought of all that easy access.

Something To Ponder

Being gay and being homosexual are two different things. Perhaps that's occurred to every other thinking person, but I had certainly never thought of it like that before. It's a very enlightening distinction, I think, that makes the phenomenon of self-hating closet cases, which I have never fully understood, much more comprehensible.

Puppeh!

I swear to dog, this is exactly what my Dusty looked like! Pugs are funny things: they're really just chill, rather happy dogs, but on the other, their wrinkles and smooshed-in faces make them look so pained and traumatized you just want to hug them. It's all part of their adorability.
