The New York Observer wrings its hands with worry over the nation's summer reading habits. They blithely and evidence-lessly assert, "This being America, summer reading tends toward the careerist or the escapist, often bypassing more sublime waters." Yes, Americans are simply vulgar, aren't they? How can the writers can stand this philistine culture, I don't know. They must have to fly to France at least once a month, just to recharge their sense of cultural superiority...
Anyway, in the interests of getting us American cultural heathens to "disable [our] TiVo[s], throw out that molding stack of New Yorkers, and get thee to a bookstore" (despite the fact that many of us don't have TiVo, don't give a fuck about The New Yorker, and go to bookstores regularly, anyway), they oh-so-helpfully regale us with the recent reading lists of a bunch of "celebrities."
Some of the lists I believe; some I don't. A few of the respondents are just a little too well-read, if you know what I mean. Others, such as Heidi Klum's, seem about right. Just don't get me started on that pompous old windbag Harold Bloom...
